Pens and Pencils – Oh My!

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Pens and Pencils.”

When was the last time you wrote something substantive — a letter, a story, a journal entry, etc. — by hand? Could you ever imagine returning to a pre-keyboard era? ~ Daily Prompt 1/17/15

Before computers much less, laptops, desktops, and tablets, I kept daily journals with a notebook and a pen. My pen had to be a Shaffer Fountain Pen. I filled journal after journal with my pen scratching of my emotions, my angers, my fears, my all consuming pain. I wrote myself out of my mental illness. I wrote and wrote and wrote. Certainly nothing I wrote, would I want published. I used it to scream at the people that made me so angry that it raged inside of me and turned into severe depression. I wrote out that anger. I told my journal things I would never tell another soul. I wrote about my love interests and about the times I was “dumped.” I wrote about my failures and about my hopes and dreams. I made sure I kept plenty of ink refills for my cheap Shaffer pen. Other than thank you notes, journals are the last things I have hand written.

When I think about using a pencil, I don’t think of writing, I think of drawing. I love to draw. My favorite things to draw are “detailed” drawings. I want my drawing to look as real as possible to the real thing. I haven’t drawn in over a year. Drawing, for me, is very calming and peaceful. With the things I have had go through in the past 5 years, I really need to recapture that calming and peaceful feeling of scratching that pencil across special paper to end up with the finished product that I am aiming for. I have very low self-esteem regarding my drawing which is why I don’t share any on WordPress(until today). I hope you like my drawing.copyright Priceless Joy

I hope that this year will find me writing more stories and drawing more beautiful things. I hope I will find the confidence to share more of it with all my followers and readers on WordPress.

  1. I like the drawing…it has good detail. I enjoy drawing also and find it to be very relaxing. It’s something you can do most anywhere and doesn’t require a lot of supplies, unlike painting. I’ve been drawing for a long time and I’m always saving various pictures of things that I want to draw one day. I work on a drawing journal all the time and have quite a few filled up now. I date everything and love to look back and see what I’ve done and improvements that I have made. Keep drawing, and don’t hesitate to show them off. I will be posting some of mine soon. I’m still in the process of getting my blog in order.

    • I would LOVE to see some of your drawings. I am not very good at it and I need to get back into drawing. I will need to do a lot of practicing to get back to where I was. I am sure you are much better than I am!

  2. Wonderful art PJ !! I am surprised you never shared it ! I loved the way you have put effort into little details ! Haaaard work indeed 🙂 I do hope you share more of your works with us in future 🙂

  3. What a wonderful drawing. The detail is amazing! Esteem issues are a serious kick in the pants. It’s kept me from trying anything creative for a very long time. I look forward to more of your excellent drawings and your writing as well. 🙂

  4. Wow, PJ! Your drawing is stunning. The composition is good and the detail incredible. I am sad to hear that you do not have confidence in your drawing, because there is real talent there. Funny, I know several people who don’t draw (technically) half as good as you do, and yet they have self-belief in spades. Here’s hoping 2015 brings you strength of conviction and boldness to share! ❤

    • Thank you so much! I haven’t drawn in over a year and I really am wanting to get back to it. It will take me a lot of practicing to get back to where I was. I am very self-conscience that my art is not good. But I am going to try to overcome that and just enjoy doing it and sharing it on my blog. Thank you so much LL!! ((Hugs!!)) xo

  5. I like your writing, the way you write, the honesty, the intent, and I like what you write about.
As for your drawing, it’s not ‘sub-standard’ by any standards! I would love to have that talent! All of my family were/are really gifted artistically, but I, on the other hand, am truly useless! I resort to words to try to paint my thoughts. But I also try to capture images I like with a camera (or phone more often).
Please write more, draw more and share more.

    • Thank you! That was a wonderful compliment! My writing is “lacking” because, as I have gotten older (not ‘old’ yet! lol) words don’t come to my mind as easily, making it hard to “paint with my words.” So you are very talented if you can paint pictures with your words! I do hope to share my art more on my blog. I also need to start drawing again. I haven’t done it in over a year and I miss it.

  6. Very nice thoughts shared by you. My inner thoughts were somewhat similar to yours – serious… but I ended up responding to the prompt in a different mood. Just went with the flow.

  7. I love to put pen to paper and just write. There is something calming about the whole process that I don’t get from the keyboard. Nice post! Beautiful art work!!! You have quite a talent and I’d love to see more.

    • Thank you Deb! I haven’t been drawing in the past year and I am missing it. I think I am going to get back to drawing again soon. And, I hope to share more of my art in the future. Thank you for the nice compliment. ((Hugs!!)) xo

    • Thank you Cat! I’m not sure what it is going to take for me not to be self-conscience about my drawings. (Become better! LOL) But I do hope to start drawing more and sharing them on my blog.

  8. Wonderful drawing! I write by hand often and send letters to my aunt in Finland. It is something special with handwritten letters. I write also my poems with pen first. Loved to draw in my teenages but lost that inspiration. Continue! You are very good at that. Hugs Anne

  9. Beautiful drawing! Personally, I am not sure I have written with pencil since second grade? The last few years, I much prefer computer. Even old dogs change.

    • Thank you Dawn. I am so critical of my own work. When I am finished and then go back to look at it all I see are my mistakes, what I should have done to make it better. In other words, I am very critical and judgmental toward my art. Thank you for the compliment. 🙂

      • I do the same thing when I paint. I try to fix my mistakes, only to mess up the painting completely. You know what is funny? In stamp collecting, for instance, it is the imperfections that make the art unique and priceless, and ‘one of a kind’. We shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves. Imperfections will maybe make our artwork unique and special. Anyway, I saw only perfection in your picture, and no mistakes. It truly is beautiful!

  10. OH PJ you need to keep drawing and share them on here! Its great! My daughter is a great drawer tho she is critical of herself too and has kind of stopped. I keep telling her to keep it up for she really has the talent for it. The last handwriting I have done is my journal too. I still keep a written journal, for yes its a perfect place and great therapy for private thoughts. My post called How Long? was something I would have usually kept for my journal.

    • Please tell your daughter to keep drawing and to keep pushing herself to get better because she WILL keep improving. I need to listen to my own advice! LOL! My “handwritten”journals got me through quite a few years of some very difficult times. I’m glad you shared your private thoughts on a post. 🙂

  11. Don’t want to sound dramatic PJ, but honestly, your drawing is so natural that I literally found myself staring at it. You are an AMAZING ARTIST, hands down! Now I am so excited for you and looking forward to seeing how beautiful this year unfolds for you 🙂 . My journal is also the only thing I willing write in with a penan d paper 🙂

    • Thank you so much Ameena. I really appreciate your comment. I am critical of my art and probably always will be because I am so far from being perfect. But that is what keeps me pushing to better myself. I understand that your journal is the only thing you will write in. I kept journals for years and years. Now, I think my blogging is a journal of sorts. xo

  12. PJ – Your ARTwork is some of the finest I’ve seen – and I can attest to receiving a very special real authentic one that it is EXTRAordinary! I wish I knew how to raise your confidence and self-esteem in this. It is sad to think you feel is is below average as it is so so so way ABOVE average. I cannot even fathom why you feel that way? Hurts my heart as you should be soaring with pride in this God-given talent! Share it! It is a very special part of you. I challenge you to share a piece a week and tell about what you were thinking and how it made you feel working on it. Pick up your pencils again! You have so much to give and share! xo

    • Thank you Jodi, that is so sweet. I miss drawing and I really do need to start it again. I think I feel the way I do is because I continue to strive for perfection and improvement. There is always room for improvement. 🙂 Thank you so much for lifting up my confidence and encouraging me to start drawing again. ((Hugs!!)) xo

I would love to read your thoughts...
