Writing 101 – A Room with a View

There is a very large window right next to my kitchen table, where I sit and work on my internet devices. I look out this window and right into one of my lovely lilac bushes. I can smell the opulent smell of those purple clusters, now in full bloom.

From this same window, I can watch my neighbors, although I rarely pay much attention. My attention is usually on my blogging, reading, writing or daydreaming.

My room, my kitchen, is surrounded in love and comfort. There are several shelves on the walls that hold many different spices from all over the world, and counter tops that hold small appliances, cannisters and larger jars of spices. My kitchen brings me comfort and is definitely my favorite room.

Sometimes I think that I would love for my window to be on a second floor or even a third floor to get a better view, but then I would not have my lilacs right there in front of my eyes to enjoy or to smell their rich and intoxicating fragrance.

Other times I think that I would love to have the view the birds have or even a view of sitting on a cloud while I am dangling my legs and feet.

For now however, my view is that of a beautiful lilac bush, loaded with magnificent purple lilacs, smelling their fragrance, as I sit next to my kitchen window interacting with my online friends.

I feel pretty contented.

  1. I love the description of the bushes. They seems to be right in front of me as well. Having the window on the second or third floor would give you the broad view/horizon view but you can never go wrong with having flowers right in front of you. Also, I love the description of the spices. Good cook? 🙂 Wish I can appreciate my kitchen as much as you, but I think my mom appreciates it more, since she’s the cook of the house. 🙂
I enjoyed your story. PS> I would be afraid of bees during the sumer time!

    • I usually have quite a few bees and wasps in the summer but they are so use to me we co-habitate with each other very well. They don’t bother me and I don’t bother them. I let them do their little “environmental” thing. LOL Thank you for reading and for the lovely comment!

      • That’s great. Bees for some reason find me and just like to scare me. For example today, in the parking lot where no flowers are or trees. A bee finds its way towards my car window… 😦
But, Im glad you get along with them! lol.

    • I have quite a few bees and wasps in the summer. I let them do their “environmental” thing. I leave them alone and they leave me alone. They don’t bug you if you are calm around them. Besides they are use to me. Thank you for reading and for your lovely comment. 🙂

  2. I love the understanding that a simple thing can bring joy. Although it could be changed, upon closer observation one finds it is not necessary. Where it currently resides brings contentment. Lovely, DSP

  3. Lilacs are one of my FAVORITE smells! I love that you embrace all the sights and smells of your surroundings. That may just be the key to happiness 🙂

  4. This is an excellent start. It’s always good to improve your writing ability but I don’t think you need it at all. Enjoy your lilacs!

  5. Beautiful description!
I like when you say that
“My room, my kitchen, is surrounded in love and comfort”
You are so lucky to have such a lovely place to sit and work:)

  6. I love how you described the room around you and the kitchen. I can actually visualize the setting and it feels so welcoming and filled with love. Lovely home 🙂

    • Thank you Lrod! I am so happy you can visualize it! It is my place of comfort and inspiration. Where I sit to work on my blogging and where I am talking to you right now! 😀

  7. Sorry. That “Frat” should have been “Great.” My iPad does that to me far too often… Enjoyed your post very much, and really would like to blog from your kitchen. Sounds like a wonderful and inspiring place.

  8. Wonderful descriptions, PJ, especially of that gorgeous lilac tree. I can almost smell it from here. Ours will be a couple of weeks yet, so your spring must be much further ahead than ours. Your kitchen sounds like a great place to spend a lot of time.

    • Yes, it is. It’s very cozy and comfy and I love all the sunshine that flows in from that window (it’s and east window). I love the smell of lilacs. Our spring is well on its way. It has been in the 70’s here. Such perfect weather!

  9. Lovely description, Joy. Is this the view from your kitchen window? The bushes must look amazing. The kitchen is where I spend a lot of my time too with the PC set up in the corner.

    • Yes, that is the view from my kitchen window next to my table. It is a very large window and being on the east it lets in a lot of wonderful light. Your computer is in your kitchen too? I use the top of my table for my iPad and will for my laptop one day.

  10. I long for those bushes to blossom. We have to wait more than a month for that yet. You focus on the” now”, enjoying life here and now. It is so wise to do that. I always sit in my kitchen and read and write and make food ever so often.

  11. This post gave me a contented feeling too! I LOVE lilacs! Love the smell of them! Thanks for this wonderful description, now I know where to picture you when I read your delightful posts 🙂

  12. I enjoyed reading your blog and I could picture what you were describing and I could feel what you were feeling I could even smell the lilacs! I am happy for you that where you are most content is in your own home!

    • Thank you very much Deb! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and let me know this. I love getting feedback. That makes me happy that you could experience this with me. 😀 🙂

  13. Awww… I love lilacs and I could imagine myself right there, smiling at those lilacs while sipping my favourite green tea. But sadly, I’m living in a hdb, an apartment like building on 6th storey and could only see the head of the trees which is sometimes bare. You are soo lucky! Thanks for making me smile with those lovely views! You write well!

    • Thank you so much! I’m happy that you enjoyed my story. At least you have a nice view from the 6th story. 🙂 Thank you for reading and for your comment. 🙂

  14. I enjoyed your room with a view, it sounded very homely and I could imagine myself there. I love lilac bushes myself and your description of their intoxicating fragrance was spot on.

    • Thank you very much. I figured that most people would go for another place for their take on a “room with a view.” So I decided to write my own twist to the assignment.

  15. So sorry about your kitty! That’s horrible. People should not take other peoples’ pets!! When I was a kid, we had a wolf (really) and he was amazing. He patrolled our whole neighborhood and made sure everyone was okay. Behind our neighborhood was a path down to a small lake. A family from our neighborhood walked out there one day and our pup tagged along. While the family was clearing away enough brush for a picnic blanket, their toddler walked out into the lake. No one noticed until they heard the splash from our guy jumping into the lake to pull the face-down baby out. He saved the kid’s life, and the mom wanted to buy him. We said no, so she resorted to putting ground beef and mashed potatoes out for him anytime he came around. Pretty soon he was hanging around there all the time (this was before leash laws) since all we had was dry food. It made me so mad. We finally had to keep him on a leash, tied in the back yard or in the house (which, after having freedom to roam, he hated).
