It’s Not About Me

People don't like me, it's as simple as that. Perhaps they have made judgements about me based on what they have read from me on the internet. Or, possibly, they have heard other people talking about me and based their conclusion on that, or saw me and didn't like what they saw. Maybe their friend doesn't like me so they don't like me either. I can only speculate, wonder, wish, hope for more communication.

“Why don't you like me?”

“Let me tell you why I don't like you.”

I feel like a gangly teenager with the buck teeth, the big round black glasses, frizzy hair, and braces. I feel like I am suppose to be in a personality contest and if I don't win then it's the end of the world.

I feel like I try so hard that I inevitably do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, eat the wrong thing, write the wrong thing…you get my jest.

I'm not here to have a pity party. I am just saying, I would like to be your friend. Why can't we be friends? Why do people have to bully, humiliate and ignore other people?

What is the expectation that we are all suppose to live up to in order to be accepted, liked, loved, and wanted?

Do I look for it in a beauty magazine? Do I read, “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (by Dale Carnagie?) Do I need to attend the “right” church, or go to the “posh” school, or wear the latest fashions, or drive the most expensive car?

Am I suppose to have a certain amount of money in my bank account, have a certain college degree, or certain type of friends?

Why are there so many uppity-up people? (Those people who think they are better than everyone else). Please tell me why you think you are better than me? And, better than Joe Blo that is sipping vodka under the Blankety Bridge?

Would the world end if you stopped feeding your ego? Do you think this world would be a better place if everyone stopped living to feed their egos? Not only would it not end, it would be a hella of a lot better place to live. Maybe countries and people would stop bombing each other, stop killing each other, stop hurting each other. Just stop….stop!

Maybe that little baby you just gave birth to, or your wife just gave birth to would have a better world in which to grow up in. A world without all this damn hate!

STOP HATING EACH OTHER! START LOVING EACH OTHER!

And, while you are at it. Please tell me why you don't like me so I can change. Or better yet. So you can change.

  1. What weighs heavier on your heart self doubt or criticism from others? For me it has frequently been me who is speaking words of self deprication and judgement into my own heart. And it has taken honnestly years of self discipline and grace to speak kindness over myself when i behave in a toyally human way. The same thing that i would laugh off in a friend, would drag me into a pit for days.
May we all be graceful to ourselves and each other to boot!

    • Thank you shariepatty! I am sorry I didn’t respond to this sooner, but for some reason my software put this comment into my junk mail and I just now happened to look in it. Thank you again!

  2. Your honesty is refreshing. This piece is as much an op-ed about what’s wrong with our culture as it is about finding your place in it. I hope it was helpful for you to write it.

    • I just updated to iOs 8 and it has been doing strange things. The last comment I made to you I was still writing and it pressed “post comment” all by itself. I have gone crazy…LOL!

  3. Yes and no. I wrote it because of some of the people in this class. I have been trying to help them with the knowledge I know -which is lacking, I am sure!) but I had to do a LOT of writing and editing in my job of 21 years nevertheless, wanting to help, and am met with silence and them ignoring me..

  4. I’m sorry you had to go through this. I don’t know about others, but i can say i liked receiving suggestions from you on my posts. We are all here to learn and help each others. I really appreciate the time you take to go through the posts, and offer suggestions. And, your knowledge shows through your comments.
We can’t really changes people, unless change is the only option for them. I know it is hard sometimes, but try to ignore the elements which disturb your piece of mind. Don’t give that power to anybody. Just be kind with yourself and keep doing the good work you’re doing.

  5. There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re an open person and sensitive to every words that you say. You know how to be diplomatic and been honest to people with tact and consideration. I even consider myself very lucky that there is a person like you that takes time to read my post and correct my faulty words.
The sad truth is that we can’t change the world with its “bad” ways. I dunno, I don’t feel that I am right to judge them. Let’s just hope that these people will change for the better. 🙂

    • Thank you Kenneth! I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by my blog and read some of my posts. When I saw your cute face on you avatar, I thought, “What an adorable face. I bet he has lots of girlfriends (if he isn’t married). LOL. You are right, we can not change other people, they have to be willing to change themselves. But it doesn’t hurt to remind them once in awhile does it? 🙂

      • Lol but I’m still 19. Well, I’m quite the opposite from what you had said haha but thanks for the impression!
Yeah your right btw, I forgot that it was completely a reminder – not an order.

I would love to read your thoughts...
