MFtS: Spirit City

“The only residents remaining in the small town of Miners Hill are spirits.”

Miners Hill is filled with the ghost-spirits of all the people tragically killed by the devastating gas leak from the manufacturing and mining plant in 1937. At that time, the fatal gas leak could not be detected and the result was the loss of 3, 047 precious and innocent lives. Included in the deaths were three hundred thirty-three children under the age of 18. The remainder were mothers waiting for their children to come home from school and father’s working at the plant or in the mine, making a living for their famillies.

Although much too late for the residents of Miners Hill, a distinctive fragrance has been added to this particular gas so it can now be easily detected.

Miners Hill, aka Spirit City, has become a huge tourist attraction in this particular area of Wyoming, stirring up the wrath and anger of the spirits which linger. (150 words)

MFtS The Orchids

“Are you laughing at me?”

“No Catherine, I am not laughing at you.” I told her for the third time in a row. Why can’t she understand?

“You have been ill. Get well, so I CAN laugh at you again.”

“I love the flowers Sissy. Thank you so much for bringing them.” Catherine held them up to her nose and smelled their fragrance. “You know that orchids are my favorite.” She sighed, “the ones that smell good anyway.”

I looked down at my nails and started picking at them, “Things are going to be better Catie. When you get out of this hospital, things will be better.” I said, almost convincingly.

“I’m sorry Sissy. It was a stupid thing for me to do. I was… I was stupid.”

I looked at the mark on her neck and my stomach plunged. All I could think about was how grateful I was that the rope had broke. (150 words)

Untitled

Dropping her line into Fool’s Lake, Adela patiently waited for something to bite, but the bait she was using wasn’t interesting the fish. Her patience was getting thin and she was feeling very close to giving up when she remembered what Hank told her,

“They will bite, just be patient. Remember, they will test you first.” .

“If I could just get a nibble, all I need is a nibble. She thought to herself.

It was getting late in the evening and her frustration was mounting.

“Hank’s going to kill me. He wanted to reel in at least one John tonight.”

Just then the bartender winked at her and sat her drink down in front of her,

“Want to meet me in my room after I get off of work for a fifty?”

Adela winked back and set her hook. (130 words)

Rattle Snake River

Diamond Jack had his hideout next to the Rattle Snake River in Latchahatchi County, Texas. My grandpa use to tell me stories about Diamond Jack and his motley gang. His legend began in the early 1800’s during the time folks were moving west to homestead land in order to own the title free and clear. Diamond Jack and his outlaw gang would lie in wait hiding and hold up the unsuspecting wagons as they were coming through.

Legend has it that as the gang were coming around a hill to surprise a wagon train, they were met head on by a tribe of Apache Indian warriors that shot the gang members with poison arrows, damn near skinned them alive before they could take their last breath. Everyone said that thieving gang got just what was coming to ’em and no tears were shed for their brutal demise. One wagon train coming through found their rotting bodies, all of em’ missing their hair. (150 words)

Monday’s Finish the Story 1/26/2015

She was unaware she was being watched as she was watching over her romping playful pups. Food was getting scarce and she needed to make a kill today for her hungry family.

The ranchers were outraged that wolves had been re-introduced into the Mancos Valley. They were a threat to their calves and were not willing to share.

Miska kept the calf in her site as she crouched down in preparation for the kill. As she began slinking toward the calf, she was careful not to be heard. Mangral, the oldest male, came bouncing toward her playfully. The calf heard him and ran to the safety of it’s mother.

The rancher dropped his gun.

Wolves are not the only predators in the valley.

Wolves have been introduced back into the wilds of the southwest United States. Ranchers were outraged and have killed most of them off. The last I have heard, the environmental groups were considering re-introducing them again. This particular conflict is kept fairly quiet in the news media.

This story was written for the challenge, “Finish the Story,” hosted by Barbara Beachem, author of the blog, Monday’s Finish the Story.

Our challenge is: using the photo prompt and the first sentence, “She was unaware she was being watched” write a story using 100 – 150 words. If you would like to join the fun and participate in this challenge, click here for more information:

Finish the Story 1-19-15

They finally made their escape.

“That was a close call mi amor.” Roberto clasped Rosa’s hand and pulled her closer to him.

“Si, I am so glad we were able to get away from him. He would never let me marry you. I just couldn’t tell him I was carryin’ su bebe’. He would kill me.”

Rosa took one hand and placed it on her stomach, “I will be showing before long and could not have kept it a secret any longer.”

“Today is the beginning of our life together mi amor.”

Roberto reached down and picked up the lightest backpack and handed it to Rosa.

When the ‘coyote’s’ jeep pulled over to pick them up, Roberto made sure the money he had been saving was still in his pocket.

“We have a long journey, but first, we must get ourselves across this border.”

“Si, Roberto, first things first.”
