FFfAW – My Friend Jake

I remember the wind blowing through my hair as I rode my horse along Wonder Bay Beach. The salty air clung to my nostrils as I breathed in the misty air. My horse galloped along the sandy beach as I laughed at the feel of complete freedom. Jake was by my side on his horse and we found ourselves racing to the end. The seagulls called in the air and we enjoyed the privacy of the beach to ourselves.

This memory is engraved into my mind. Jake left for war one week after this and I never saw him again.

FFfAW-Running as Fast as I Can

The other night I was walking home from my friend's house when I saw a white van driving down the street very slowly. Immediately I thought of the news of a white van being seen at which time a young girl was kidnapped. My heart skipped a beat and I began running down the street to my home.

The van sped up as I was running and my heart was beating out of my chest. The fear that I felt was palpable and I just knew I was about to be kidnapped too.

Suddenly, the van pulled up beside me and I tried to run even faster, when a voice from the van said,

“Young lady, which way is it to Main Street?”

I didn't turn and look, instead I pointed my finger in the other direction, and picked up my speed.

The van turned around and drove off in that direction and I was finally home safe and sound.

FFfAW – Staying Safe

My husband works at the Texaco station near Bangle Bay beach and we only live 3 blocks from there. Because of that my husband could walk to work and leave me with our one and only car to be able to run errands with.

Yesterday, as he was walking to work someone shot at him. He dove into bushes nearby and avoided being hit. Someone up the road from his location was hit and is in the hospital in critical condition.

I will be waking up at 5:00 am from now on and driving him to work.

It's worth it.

FFfAW – Love Blooms

I love taking my dog for a walk at the dog park two blocks from my house. It is so beautiful there. A path runs close to the river which is shaded by huge trees.

I take Lucy there every day. We walk for two hours and meet a lot of interesting people and their dogs. Yesterday we met Troy and his two dogs, Ruger and Pistol. We are going to start walking together every day! I look forward to that.

I see a long friendship happening with Troy and I and I can hardly wait for tomorrow to come.

FFfAW Memories

I love going to our cabin in the woods in the fall when the leaves are magnificent colors.

Today, as I drive to our special place I remember all the memories we made together.

I remember fishing in the stream, having bonfires on chilly evenings and cooking hotdogs and marshmallows over the fire.

I remember frying fish at night and biscuits and gravy in the mornings.

I remember wading through the stream while wet sand squished between my toes and how I laughed because you squealed when a fish touched your ankle.

Those are the days I love to remember.

FFfAW – Watching Soccer

I wheel by this park every day and see the same boys playing soccer. It makes me wish to be young again – young enough to get out in the middle of the park and run and kick a ball.

I use to play soccer when I was younger. I wasn't the star athlete on the team but I was pretty darn close. Well, kind of.

But that was years ago – before my accident. Before the young man ran his car right into my door because he was texting on his phone. Before they had to amputate my legs.

FFftPP – Stomach Flu

Maggie, I have had a stomach ache for about two weeks. I think from something I ate.”

“What have you been eating, Mabel?”

“Oh, just the usual, bugs…scorpions. I think I got a bad scorpion.”

“You know Mabel, there's been a bad stomach flu going around the camp. Could you have a little stomach bug?”

“Well, that is possible but no one else in my family has it.”

“Grandpappy Norton had a bit of a stomach bug recently.”

“In that case, that's probably what I have, a stomach bug.”

“…Mabel, what is that peculiar smell?”

“OH NO, my pants!”

FFfAW – Friendship

The cloudy gray day looked like I felt. I didn't know why I kept feeling this way, day after crummy day.

I thought I would be happy to see the kids go back to school. But that felt as though something important was missing.

Then, my friend, Katie called, asking me to meet her at the China Boat for lunch. We had a wonderful lunch, catching up on gossip after not seeing each other for most of the summer and we laughed and laughed.

I went home feeling much lighter, realizing what I was missing. I just needed my friend.

My Friend, Monte

Every summer, I go to a dude ranch in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado where I have access to their ponies twenty-four hours a day. My daily routine is to ride Monte, my favorite pony, to a picnic area next to Lemon Lake. Monte lazily grazes while I eat my lunch. I take in the beauty of the lake and mountains and breathe the crisp clean mountain air. Monte looks up at me and laughs, as though he knows what I am thinking. I laugh back. He lazily goes back to his grazing. I go back to my thinking.

SPF-The Actress

Lucinda pretends a lot. Sometimes she pretends she is a princess, other times she pretends she is a damsel in distress, and tonight she is pretending to be an actress. As she stands outside the theatre she can hear the actors playing their parts and she pretends she is among them.

It's a cold night and her mother is trying to keep warm inside a cardboard box on the south side of the building where the wind can't be felt. Lucinda is cold too, her coat really isn't that warm, but tonight she doesn't care. Tonight she is an actress.
