FFfAW – Flower Power

My best friend bought himself an old car and painted it to resemble a flower garden. “Flower Power,” he said.

His plans were to go to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco and live in a hippie commune. He was into, “Love, Peace and Flower Power.”

I wished him well as he loaded up his flower power car. I laughed at the flower bed growing on the roof.

“Please stay safe,” I yell to him as he started the car to pull away.

I watch him drive down the street and know deep down, I will never see my friend again.

When I was in high school, the “Hippie Age” was going strong. I had a dear friend that wanted to be apart of the hippy commune in Haight-Ashbury (San Francisco, California). After graduation, I believe she left to follow her dream. I have not seen her since graduation, but I think of her often.

  1. OH what a bittersweet ending and then to know its kinda true!! How cool would it be if somehow your friend would come upon this post and contact you 🙂 Hey you never know! 🙂 Great job!

  2. Love this post! 😃 It would be interesting to find out what kind of life your friend has had all these years. We just had a line dance social last night and some were dressed like they did back then….I didn’t dress the theme this time because I didn’t have time to change from one event to another that I went to that day.

  3. Huh, I wonder what happened to your friend, wouldn’t it be funny if she were a lawyer or policewoman something law-abiding! What a fun story…and I love Flower Power!! 🙂

    • I would love to know what happened to her! Yes, that would really be funny to find out she was a lawyer or something to do with the law. However, knowing her, I doubt it. LOL! We use to have to wear dresses or skirts to school and they had to come to our knee. She wore a mini skirt one day and they took a picture of her in the principal’s office on her knees showing that her skirt didn’t touch the floor. She was sent home to change. Hahaha!

  4. I remember the hippy time very well because that was during my youth! Some really left everything behind and lived in those commune situation. Love your story. Would be interesting to know where your “friend” is today.

  5. The picture was an interesting picture for the prompt. I’m glad it inspired in you memories of your friend. I like your story and the truth behind it!

  6. Great story…those were the days we promised to fix the world with LOVE…The ideal was there if only . It would be nice to hear if she became a member of what se fought against or did not survive the days of hard drugs.

  7. Goodness that went somewhere I wasn’t expecting! I like how open-ended it is. This could be the end of a friendship…or the beginning of a new life.

  8. This story reminds me of 1970 and driving out the California – not to join the peace movement but to be with my first husband who was a Navy corpsman during Viet Nam.

These days, I love driving up to San Francisco on a day trip…sometimes we spend the entire day in the Haight-Ashbury district. I was sorta disappointed when I first saw it, though. Very commercialized – like Bourbon Street.

In a car like that, your character better drive the speed limit 😛

  9. Ahh to be a hippy. In Geelong there is a brewery called “Little Creatures”. They have a bar, meals and tours of the brewery. They also have a great outdoor area, where there are decorative wall garden beds, tables and chairs to sit at, a sand pit for children, and an amazing car (I thing from memory that it is a volkswagon bug) that has been yarn bombed. It is covered in knitting and crocheting installations. It looks amazing as does the photo above.
I like your work, well written. I would like to read more of your work. Cassie
