My best friend bought himself an old car and painted it to resemble a flower garden. “Flower Power,” he said.
His plans were to go to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco and live in a hippie commune. He was into, “Love, Peace and Flower Power.”
I wished him well as he loaded up his flower power car. I laughed at the flower bed growing on the roof.
“Please stay safe,” I yell to him as he started the car to pull away.
I watch him drive down the street and know deep down, I will never see my friend again.

When I was in high school, the “Hippie Age” was going strong. I had a dear friend that wanted to be apart of the hippy commune in Haight-Ashbury (San Francisco, California). After graduation, I believe she left to follow her dream. I have not seen her since graduation, but I think of her often.
This is my 100 word submission for the challenge, Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers. We are given a prompt photo and approximately 75-175 words with which we use to create our story. There’s always a little bit of truth in our fiction isn’t there Priceless?
Yes, there really is Colleen.
My dream! I’m such a modern-day hippie. My mom says I was meant to live in San Francisco :-). Great story!
I love modern day hippies!! Thank you!
OH what a bittersweet ending and then to know its kinda true!! How cool would it be if somehow your friend would come upon this post and contact you 🙂 Hey you never know! 🙂 Great job!
I thought of that when I was writing it. That would really be nice to hear from her after all these years!
Love this post! 😃 It would be interesting to find out what kind of life your friend has had all these years. We just had a line dance social last night and some were dressed like they did back then….I didn’t dress the theme this time because I didn’t have time to change from one event to another that I went to that day.
That sounds like it was a fun event! Thank you for the sweet comment about my story. I wish I knew what happened to Delia. I would love to know.
The little car reminded me of that time of “flower power” too. I feel sad that you never saw your hippie again. Cute idea about including the flower bed on the roof.
When I saw this photo it immediately took me back to my high school days and the “hippie revolution.” LOL!
Me too. 🙂
:o)
Huh, I wonder what happened to your friend, wouldn’t it be funny if she were a lawyer or policewoman something law-abiding! What a fun story…and I love Flower Power!! 🙂
I would love to know what happened to her! Yes, that would really be funny to find out she was a lawyer or something to do with the law. However, knowing her, I doubt it. LOL! We use to have to wear dresses or skirts to school and they had to come to our knee. She wore a mini skirt one day and they took a picture of her in the principal’s office on her knees showing that her skirt didn’t touch the floor. She was sent home to change. Hahaha!
HA! That is funny… 🙂
I remember the hippy time very well because that was during my youth! Some really left everything behind and lived in those commune situation. Love your story. Would be interesting to know where your “friend” is today.
You and I must be around the same age. I wish I knew where my friend is. I would love to hear from her.
Yes sometimes I also wish I knew where my primary school friends are. I had two very good friends till we went to high school. Each went to a different school.
That would be nice for you to find them and talk to them.
Awww. Just the sight of this car makes me smile, Just full of colors. I love how the main character goes to pursue their dream.
Thank you Ameena! It sure brings back memories! 🙂
Noooo! Come back old friend. A very lovely piece.
Thank you! I wish she would!
Ominous ending. I like it!
Thank you so much! 🙂
Delicious story!
Thank you so much Graham!
A bittersweet story, but enjoyable nonetheless 🙂 I love that random things can remind us of old friends
Thank you Angie! That is true how everyday things can make us think of things. I think about her often and wish I could talk to her.
The picture was an interesting picture for the prompt. I’m glad it inspired in you memories of your friend. I like your story and the truth behind it!
Thank you Mandi!!
Great story 🙂
Thank you so much! 🙂
I like it! 🙂 This is a beautiful story of nostalgia though I really didn’t get to see the “Hippie Age”. Sigh…
It was a fun time to be a young adult. Hippies were all for love and peace and harmony. Of course they did marijuana which was a made blemish on them and especially on those who did harder drugs..
Oh, those were the good times… Well, not that this era is awful but the old times were far more less chaotic than today.
Yes, it was less chaotic back then. Seems times were much simplier.
I was going to try and read your story tonight Maria, but I’m so tired I think I will wait and read it in the morning.
By all means, take your time PJ! I wouldn’t want to steal your time from your sleep. 🙂
🙂
Wonderful story! It fits very well with the picture.
Thank you J.A.!
Great story…those were the days we promised to fix the world with LOVE…The ideal was there if only . It would be nice to hear if she became a member of what se fought against or did not survive the days of hard drugs.
Thank you Donna! I would love to know what happened to her. Hopefully, she didn’t get caught up with hard drugs, but you never know.
hopefully not
Goodness that went somewhere I wasn’t expecting! I like how open-ended it is. This could be the end of a friendship…or the beginning of a new life.
Thank you for your comment. It seems to be an end to a friendship and the beginning of a new life.
This story reminds me of 1970 and driving out the California – not to join the peace movement but to be with my first husband who was a Navy corpsman during Viet Nam.
These days, I love driving up to San Francisco on a day trip…sometimes we spend the entire day in the Haight-Ashbury district. I was sorta disappointed when I first saw it, though. Very commercialized – like Bourbon Street.
In a car like that, your character better drive the speed limit 😛
Ellespeth
That’s nice that you have been there (Haight-Ashbury). I never have. Thank you for the wonderful comment!
How wistful, you catch the moment well.
Thank you! 🙂
Aw, what a wistful story! I hope your friend what she was looking for.
I wish I knew Uday! 🙂
Ahh to be a hippy. In Geelong there is a brewery called “Little Creatures”. They have a bar, meals and tours of the brewery. They also have a great outdoor area, where there are decorative wall garden beds, tables and chairs to sit at, a sand pit for children, and an amazing car (I thing from memory that it is a volkswagon bug) that has been yarn bombed. It is covered in knitting and crocheting installations. It looks amazing as does the photo above.
I like your work, well written. I would like to read more of your work. Cassie
How cute – yarn bombed! That sounds like a fun place to go!
